The Sikov Elder Law Clinic is a clinic devoted to the ever-growing field of Elder Law. This enriching course will focus on the robust field of Elder Law from the beginning of the aging continuum to the end. In class, students will cover elder law topics such as estate planning, guardianship, Medicaid planning, probate and estate administration, inheritance tax filing, and applications of Artificial Intelligence in the field.
Classroom Component
Students will meet twice a week in a classroom setting where they will review the law, examine scenarios that will prepare them for real-life representation, and discuss their individual cases in a case round report. This classroom setting will be approximately five hours each week, and it will be devoted to learning the areas of Elder Law referenced above.
Fieldwork
- Students interview clients, conduct the necessary factual investigation and legal research for their cases, and draft legal documents tailored to their clients’ unique plans and cases.
- Students may make community presentations on Elder Law issues.
- Students will have a caseload of between 4 and 6 cases at a time, all in various stages of development. Students must spend at least 104 hours during the semester (8-10 hours/week) representing clients.
- There may be an opportunity to work on cases with a partner.
- In addition to the two classes each week, students will be required to meet with their supervising attorney for a weekly status meeting and will work in the clinic for an hour each week of the semester.

The extension is 2 credits for one semester. Enrollment requires faculty authorization.
Eligibility Requirements / Prerequisites
Students who have completed three semesters of law school. Students must attend a clinic informational session or an open house before registration.
