Lockerbie bomber freed
Dwyer Arce at 12:00 AM ET

On August 20, 2009, Scottish Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill announced the release of Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi. Al Megrahi had served over eight years of a life sentence after being convicted of the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing. He was released on compassionate grounds and transferred to his native Libya after being diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer. The release has caused ongoing legal and political controversy surrounding the diagnosis and corporate influence in the release.
