John Burkoff on a New U.S. Sentencing Commission Study

Professor John Burkoff is quoted in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review in connection with a new study released by the United States Sentencing Commission.

University of Pittsburgh law professor John Burkoff said the Sentencing Commission report raises troubling questions, but a system that doesn’t distinguish between a cold-blooded killer and someone helping an ailing spouse to commit suicide is not the answer, he said.

“Discretion is not necessarily a bad thing,” Burkoff said. “We want a judge to consider the circumstances in setting the sentence.”
