Law Alumni Association: Scholarship Program
The University of Pittsburgh Law Alumni Association (UPLAA) Board provides three tuition scholarships annually to deserving law students in their third year of study. The competition for these scholarships is remarkable. The members of the UPLAA Board are pleased to profile the following winners for 2016.
Patrick Augustine completed his undergraduate degree in Political Science at West Chester University of Pennsylvania in 2013. During his time at Pitt Law, Mr. Augustine has served on the executive board of the Pitt Law Women’s Association. He is also an active member of the Pitt Law Income Sharing Foundation (PLISF). Upon graduation, he hopes to pursue a career in general trial work. Mr. Augustine has been a member of the United States Coast Guard for the past four years. He is active in the community and serves a number of different causes.
Valerie Howell earned a dual degree in Political Science and French from the University of California, Davis in 2011. Ms. Howell is a certified legal intern with the Immigration Law Clinic, a virtual Foreign Service intern with the United States Department of State, and is a research assistant for Professor Deborah Brake. During her time at Pitt Law, Ms. Howell has participated in various organizations, including the Hispanic Law Society, Pitt Law Income Sharing Foundation (PLISF), the International Law Society, Pitt Law Women’s Association, and JURIST. Upon graduation, Ms. Howell intends to pursue a career in public interest law.
Michael Roche attended Slippery Rock University where he graduated summa cum laude and earned a B.A. in Political Science. During his time at Slippery Rock University, Mr. Roche served as President of the Pre-law Society and President of Pi Sigma Alpha, the National Political Science Honor Society. He was also the recipient of the Butler County Bar Association Scholarship, and the Peter J. Oesterling Pre-Law Scholarship. Mr. Roche has been a legal intern for the Butler County District Attorney’s Office, the PA Air National Guard Judge Advocate General’s Office, and Black Box Corporation’s General Counsel. Mr. Roche is a recipient of the Dean’s Scholarship at Pitt Law which is based on academic merit. He is currently the Community Outreach Chair for the OutLaw LGBTQ organization at Pitt Law and is also a member of Phi Alpha Delta. Mr. Roche is currently enlisted and is an active member of the Pennsylvania Air National Guard, 171st Air Refueling Wing in Pittsburgh, PA. He is also a student practitioner for the Veteran’s Practicum at Pitt Law where he assists veterans in VA claims and discharge upgrade claims. Following law school, Mr. Roche plans to pursue a career in employment law within the Pittsburgh legal community.
